THE MIDWAY VETERANS OF NO RIGHT TO WIN:

AOCM NEWTON E. DELCHAMPS, USN-Retired

Left:  Delchamps in 1942.  Right:  With Wife Effie, c. 1999

Newton “Del” Delchamps reported aboard USS Yorktown shortly before the Battle of Midway and was assigned to the bombsight repair shop.  He was destined for one of the attack squadrons as an aviation ordnanceman, but Yorktown’s fate in the battle intervened.   After the battle, he was assigned to the reconstituted VT-8 aboard USS Saratoga (CV-3) and flew with the aircrew of a TBF Avenger during the Guadalcanal campaign.  Del retired from the Navy as a master chief petty officer.
