The Battle of Midway Roundtable Opening Remarks

Welcome to the November Issue of the Battle of Midway RoundTable.  In November we didn't have a lot of content, articles, or submissions.  Holiday's tend to do that.  But we do have some important information.

The first is a warning about a BOM website that had been very useful in the past as far as information and content.  It was apparently either hacked or more likely hijacked by some human debris that will infect your computer and possibly try to steal information from you.  Don't go there, even if curious now.  It likely won't end well.

As for other things, I continue to work recovering the Chris Hawkinson pages although I have not uploaded any more pages.  It takes a bit of work to convert them to something that can be usefully displayed.  But they are coming along.  Interesting think I find is that one page leads me to a link to another page, and then that one leads me to yet another link.  Since there is no realy index left any longer due to the archive of the site it's like a treasure hunt.  So I'm working on adding the page to my own index as I recover each page.

And just so we have something new, or at least if not new, maybe not a lot of people have seen the pictures I included three.

All for now.  Putting the December issue together so that will be out in a couple days.

Avoid this Midway website

16 January 2024
From Ron Russell

In one of our 2010 newsletters, I recommended a new BOM website to everyone, MIDWAY1942 (dot) ORG. At the time, it was an excellent resource. That was then, this is now. For anyone who is surfing or searching for BOM info on the web, don't go there. That URL has been co-opted by a malware engine that will attempt to freeze your browser and direct you to a "repair" that will only make things worse. (The format I used above for the URL was to keep it from becoming a link--again, avoid it like the virus that it is.)

That's too bad because in 2010 the site had a lot of useful content. A top-rated security system like Norton or McAfee might block it for you, but it found its way through Windows Security in my case. Midway researchers, beware.

--Ron Russell

Even if you're curious avoid the page.  Some of these infected pages don't really need you to do anything other than just open the page as the content is likely downloaded to your computer cache and can be initiated from there depending on a lot of factors.  One of the reasons you should clear your cache every now and then and/or use a vpn proxy.

As always make a backup copy of anything you need on your computer.  My personal opinion is you can never have too many backup copies.

Midway AAR's

26 November 2023
From Will Daly

Hi Im trying to view the Midway AAR's of the commanders and even with adobe acrobat pro nothing is popping up for many of them, whats the deal with that?

Thanks for your time

Unfortunately many of these link to pages that have been moved or taken down.  Thanks for pointing it out.  I'm in the process of finding the information and either updating the link or if that fails copy the content from the old page and host it here.  I'm in the process of tracking down the old pages as the site either has moved the page or removed it.

Images From the Battle of Midway

Since November didn't have a lot of articles or submissions I thought I'd share a few images that are interesting although not anything new.

Picture was taken from the USS Pensacola after she and several other ships were detached from Task Force 16 to go to the aid of Yorktown after she was attacked.  Ships likely to be aft are the USS Benham to the left and USS Vincennes to the right.  The wake to the right is probably from the USS Balch that was steaming ahead.  The four ships were to help defend the Yorktown from further attacks after she was hit by the Japanese Val Dive Bombers in the morning and came to a stop.  All four ships would reach Yorktown before the Kate torpedo bombers arrived but with Yorktown's reduced speed even the additional AA fire could not prevent two torpedoes from finding their mark.
