THE MIDWAY VETERANS OF NO RIGHT TO WIN:

LCDR SAM LASER, USNR-Retired

Left:  Laser in 1942.     Right:   Laser in 2005.

Sam Laser enlisted in an advanced rating program in 1941 that sent him directly to the fleet as a Yeoman 2nd class (equivalent to an army sergeant) with no training whatsoever!  His qualification for all that: he could type.  Although the going was initially rough, he says that on-the-job training may be the best way to do it.

Assigned to USS Yorktown’s gunnery department, his battle station was atop the island in the forward 5-inch gun director, giving him an amazing (and highly hazardous) view of the Battle of Midway.  He left the Navy at the end of the war to attend law school, then returned to the Naval Reserve as a JAG attorney.
