ERRATA

(Minor corrections to the text)

updated:  2 May 2012

It’s rather normal that some number of errors of fact or composition will creep into any lengthy manuscript, no matter how meticulous the author and his editor are in proofreading.  So, here are the known passages in No Right to Win that should be changed.  You may want to enter these in your copy.

  1. Page v (frontispiece illustration):  The web site for John Greaves was changed after publication to:  http://www.johngreavesart.ca/

  1. Page 4:  Bill Price's meeting with Howard Ady III (son of the PBY pilot) is placed in 1997.  It was actually 1990.  Initial e-mail exchanges started shortly thereafter.  The 1997 date, cited as the start of the BOMRT, refers to its first public announcement on Chris Hawkinson’s web site.

  1. Page 215, last para., last sentence:  the cited quote may be erroneously attributed to Stephen Budiansky, although it’s likely that he would acknowledge the sentiment.  In the television documentary, author David Kahn said, “I believe [Stinnett] believes what he had said, but I think he’s wrong.”  That may be the actual quote that led to this paragraph.

  1. Page 231, first line:  Name correction:  Edgar Fox, rather than Edward.  Same on page 262 (Chapter 5, Note 2), page 279 (list of names), and page 328 (index entry).

  1. Page 263:  Note 3 to Chapter 7 cites “Note 11 of Chapter 5 above.”  That should be “Note 11 of Chapter 6 above.”

  1. Page 266:  Note 2 to Chapter 9 infers that Jones was aboard the Ganesvoort when it was hit by a Kamikaze in December 1944.  He had transferred off the ship prior to that time.

  1. Page 279:  Edgar Fox was actually assigned to the 23rd Provisional Company, which was attached to the 6th Defense Battalion upon its arrival at Midway.  See also item #4 above.

  1. Page 301:  The Japanese order of battle omits the invasion force under VADM Kondo.  For an excellent listing of the order of battle on both sides, click here.

  1. Page 327:  In the index, VT-8 pilot William Evans is cited on page 82.  That reference is actually for VF-3 pilot Robert Evans.
